Drapes: fabrics, folds and choosing a sample

When choosing drapes, compare surface, fibre composition, folds and everyday use alongside colour. Satin, velour, velvet and silk describe different aspects of a fabric. This guide supports a sample discussion; availability, price and light performance for a particular material need confirmation in the actual proposal.

What do you need by day and evening

Describe both positions: open drapes during the day and closed panels in the evening. Outside views, light during sleep and decoration are separate requirements. A dense appearance does not automatically establish blackout; lining and the system need separate discussion. Prepare daytime and evening room photographs for the visit, noting what you want to preserve. Similar colour names do not establish an identical result from two samples with different structures.

Satin describes weave and surface

When discussing satin, separate the weave and surface from fibre composition. A satin weave is not the name of a particular fibre and does not establish opacity by itself. If sheen appeals to you, compare the sample under the room's lighting. Ask separately about fibre percentages, lining and care instructions. A screen highlight is not a fixed shade: light and shadow across an actual fold also belong in the appearance discussion.

Velour and velvet need sample details

Velour and velvet names relate to pile surfaces, but they do not establish identical construction or composition. Check information for the actual material. Discuss how pile direction affects appearance and how direction will be kept consistent across panels. For patterned fabric, discuss the motif repeat separately. View a folded sample as well as a colour card. A soft appearance does not specify weight, cleaning requirements or blackout performance; those remain separate questions.

Silk fibre versus a silk effect

Silk is a fibre name; natural silk, a silk blend and a silk-look surface are different descriptions. Do not present an effect as confirmed silk content. Ask for fibre names and percentages, and retain the sample code in the proposal. If sheen or a soft appearance is your main priority, state that directly. This makes alternatives with different compositions easier to compare without replacing label information with an impression from a photograph.

Allow for folds, lining and side space

Plan the space occupied by open drapes as carefully as the closed appearance. Lining, headings and accessories contribute to the complete assembly; support suitability requires assessment for the actual conditions. This page specifies no load limit or installation method. A hypothetical opening 200 cm wide is not an ordering measurement and does not automatically determine fabric quantity. Agree fullness, pattern repeat, finished length and side stacking space together for the chosen arrangement.

Record sample codes and label information

Prepare an overall room view, wall and furniture colours and the existing support photograph for the consultation. Record each sample's code, shade, fibre percentages and proposed lining. Where there is a pattern, ask about its repeat and matching between panels. Do not assume changing fabric leaves an earlier calculation unchanged. Make clear what information supports the finished appearance, fabric quantity and additional work so comparisons extend beyond a single unexplained total.

Can every drape use the same wash routine

No. Care follows the actual product label and complete specification. Fibres, lining and decorative elements may have different instructions; this page prescribes no universal wash temperature, method or shrinkage percentage. Ask about removable components and service access early. Preparation does not require taking down heavy curtains at height yourself. The next step is a consultation using the selected sample and room information, followed by agreed dimensions, components and care notes for that proposal.
