Roman shades: folds, dimensions and lifting systems

Plan Roman folds, raised stack height and window opening together. Check fabric, light transmission and care against the particular system.

Roman shades and roller systems

A Roman shade gathers into horizontal folds as it rises; the appearance depends on the particular construction. Compare a roller system separately by how it retracts and the space it occupies. First decide which open position the room needs and how frequently the window is used. A photograph communicates the silhouette without revealing every lifting component. Request a system description rather than choosing a mechanism solely because two decorative examples look similar.

Allow for the raised stack

Before confirming an order, request the raised fabric stack height and mechanism dimensions for the chosen model and size. Consider where that block will sit relative to the glazing and opening sash. Inside-opening and above-opening positions should be assessed on the actual window. Do not assign a universal headspace from another interior photograph. Understand both the closed position and how much access remains when the shade is raised for ordinary daily use.

Handles, opening and preliminary measurements

Record opening width and height, handle position, sash movement and the proposed mounting area. For example, a window 1.2 m wide and 1.5 m high does not establish the finished shade size. Placement and coverage must be specified instead of deducting a standard allowance yourself. During measurement, ask for opening movement and handle access to be checked. A photograph-based instruction cannot replace selection of appropriate fixings or the final installation calculation for the particular location.

Match fabric with the lifting system

Check whether the selected fabric suits the exact mechanism and proposed panel dimensions. Agree lining, edge treatment, pattern placement and folds as parts of one complete product. Where windows are seen together, discuss their combined appearance and raised levels. A matching fabric name does not automatically establish matching construction. The specification should identify the model, sample, dimensions and components so subsequent changes can be traced rather than hidden behind the general Roman shade description.

Daylight and evening privacy

Assess the physical sample under daylight and evening lighting resembling the intended room. Discuss visibility through the material separately from light around its edges. Roman folds do not establish blackout performance, while a light-reducing fabric alone does not describe the complete installed result. Define a particular daylight task for a bedroom, kitchen or office. Compare designs against that task without treating a photograph as measured transparency, fibre information or a guarantee of complete room darkness.

Care and questions before ordering

Request instructions for detaching the textile component and caring for the whole product. Removable fabric does not automatically permit washing, including hand washing. Do not soak the mechanism or dismantle the system without manufacturer instructions. Describe the opening and intended result in the enquiry; photographs can be prepared for an agreed meeting. Before ordering, clarify controls, servicing access, retracted dimensions, care and work scope. A free measurement and catalogue visit helps review these points before dimensions are confirmed.
