Understand the zebra operating approach

A zebra blind has repeating sheer and denser bands that move relative to one another in two layers. Their alignment changes the visible coverage in front of the window. This offers a different way to discuss daylight adjustment without fully raising the covering, although the controls must be checked on the particular model. View a working sample in open, intermediate and more covered positions: one interior photograph does not show the complete everyday operating sequence.

Compare a continuous roller shade

A conventional roller shade, also described as stor in the catalogue, presents a continuous surface and raises its fabric onto a roller to expose the glazing. Zebra adds the horizontal rhythm of bands and their changing alignment. That pattern may suit one interior while another calls for an uninterrupted surface. These are selection criteria, not proof of material quality. Both options still require confirmation of the actual fabric, operating mechanism and installation position.

Test privacy after dark

A sheer area that feels comfortable in daylight may not provide the privacy you want after indoor lights are switched on. Do not decide from a daytime photograph alone. Discuss different band positions under conditions similar to your own room. A denser-looking stripe is not evidence of blackout performance: fabric transmission and light around the installed edges need separate consideration. For a bedroom, describe night-time privacy and your response to early morning light as distinct requirements.

Mechanism width is not fabric width

An order needs to distinguish the full overall dimension of the assembly from the width of fabric covering the glazing. Controls and fixings may occupy space, so the two dimensions should not automatically be treated as identical. The exact relationship belongs in the specification of the selected system. Do not transfer a deduction from one mechanism to another. Label each measurement with its purpose, unit and the person responsible for confirming the final value.

Cassette, handle and sash movement

An open roller and a cassette assembly may need different space around the window. Note projecting handles and the path of the opening sash. Consider how the window will be used with the fabric lowered and gathered. In a kitchen, describe objects on the sill and the position of the work surface too. Ask for the dimensions and placement of the actual mechanism rather than adopting a universal clearance. Compatibility should be established before approving an order.

Adapt a photographic style reference

The blue, grey and beige zebra references in the photo catalogue help compare band rhythm, colour and the relationship with a room. They do not establish stock availability or guarantee an exact copy of the photographed interior. Record the example name and discuss adjustments for your opening width, light direction and neighbouring surfaces. Viewing a real fabric sample in your room's lighting is a separate decision step; the photograph cannot replace the product specification.

A preliminary example and later care

Suppose your initial notes describe an opening 1.4 metres wide and 1.8 metres high. These numbers describe the window, not a finished fabric or cassette size. Confirm final dimensions, controls and sash movement during measurement. Request care instructions for the exact product rather than applying a universal soaking method or chemical cleaner to every zebra fabric. Use the separate care guide for maintenance questions and the free measurement and catalogue enquiry to plan the proposed installation.
